There are all kinds of weird traditions surrounding marriage, but why are wedding rings worn on the 4th finger?
There are all kinds of weird traditions surrounding marriage. Many couples decide to include time-honored practices like engagement rings, a whit dress, the father-daughter dance and a honeymoon. But one tradition that’s tough to mess up is the rings. The rings obviously form an infinite circle and they are meant to symbolize the never-ending love that the bride and groom have for each other. But did you ever wonder why wedding rings are worn on the 4th finger?
Well some believe that this practice comes from an ancient Chinese tradition, which considers marriage to be an important bond that should never be broken. According to this ancient tradition your thumb represents your parents, the index finger represents your siblings, the middle finger represents yourself, the ring finger represents your life partner and the little finger represents your children. So why is this important? Well by folding your hands in a certain way it is impossible to separate the two ring fingers.
Don’t believe us? Just watch what happens when this woman puts her hand together and tries to separate her ring fingers. Although this might not be the only reason why we wear wedding rings on our 4th finger, but it’s certainly the most poetic one.
