Wedding rings symbolize the eternal love of the partners. They are circular in shape because a circle has no beginning and no end, which means marriages are meant to last forever.
But, why wedding rings are almost always placed on the fourth finger of the left hand?
According to a Greek and a Roman belief many years ago, a vein from the fourth finger of the left hand ran directly to the heart. This vein was also known as the vein of love. Because of this belief, wearing the wedding ring on the fourth finger became a tradition. However, scientific studies showed this myth is not true, but many people still like to believe in it.
Moreover, there is a fun Chinese theory. Each finger on your left hand represents the past, present, and future generations in your family. For instance, the thumb is symbolizing your parents, your index finger represents your siblings, the middle finger represents yourself, the fourth finger represents your life-partner and the fifth finger represents your future children.
Now, place your hands together and bend only your middle fingers together. Allow your other fingers to touch.
Now start pulling each finger apart, individually. Your thumbs will pull apart, signifying you are not destined to be with your parents forever. The same will happen to your second and small finger. It means that you are not meant to be with your siblings forever because they will lead their own lives. Also, your kids will start their own lives one day.
Now try to separate your ring fingers. The fourth finger represents your life partner. These fingers do not lift as easily as the other fingers because you and your partner are meant to be together forever.
Additionally, there is another “myth”, which is more practical. More individuals are right handed and it means that the left hand is not used as much. Wearing the wedding ring on the left hand will not damage the ring as much as if it were worn on the right hand. Moreover, the ring finger is one of the least used fingers.
However, people from countries like Peru, Spain, Venezuela, Norway, India, and Denmark that wear their wedding rings on the fourth finger of their right hand. The reason is the dominance of the right hand, representing the strength of the marriage between a husband and a wife.
Last but not least, it is up to you on which hand you will wear your wedding ring. Anyway, the eternal love between the bride and groom matters the most.
